Experience of introducing written consent forms for myocardial perfusion scintigraphy
The side effects and complications of myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS) are well documented. While informed consent is mandatory, the use of written consent forms is variable in Australian practices and hospitals. Prior to June 2008 neither the Cardiology nor Nuclear Medicine departments at our campus requested signed consent before undergoing their procedure. In a recent pilot survey for 3 months 101 patients were given information/consent sheet to complete before commencement of the stress component of their study. The response was categorised for each patient and 100% compliance was achieved with no patient refusing to undergo the procedure. It would appear that all queries were answered and consistent information was delivered without extra time required from Nuclear Medicine staff. Currently all patients are now required to complete informed consent prior to exercise/persantin sestamibi studies.
